‘Doctor Who’ Update: Tilda Swinton At The Forefront To Replace Peter Capaldi; Season 10 Villains Revealed [VIDEO]
ByThe upcoming tenth season of "Doctor Who" is going to be Peter Capaldi's last. Naturally, fans are already speculating about his replacement for the iconic Time Lord role. Several names have already popped up online, and there are hearsays that actress Tilda Swinton is at the forefront to portray the next iteration of The Doctor.
According to Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes, a betting and gambling company based in London, Whovian punters believe that the next Doctor will be a woman, and odds are high that Swinton will portray the character. Among the names thrown in the list, Swinton bagged the lead at 7/2. The 56-year-old actress initially entered the list at 10/1.
Other fan-favorites to portray The Doctor are Kris Marshall (4/1), Olivia Colman (5/1), Maxine Peake (8/1), Ben Whishaw (10/1), Richard Madden (16/1), Idris Elba (20/1), Gwendoline Christie (20/1), Robert Carlyle (20/1) and Michelle Gomez (33/1). Some fans also want to see "Agent Carter" star Hayley Atwell and "Sherlock" actress Amanda Abbington in the role.
Acclaimed writer Neil Gaiman, who also penned "Doctor Who" episodes in the past, told BBC that he wants a female Time Lord after Capaldi's run. He specifically wishes for "Bake Off" host Sue Perkins, "The Fall" star Gillian Anderson or Helen Mirren to be the next Time Lord.
Season 10 will showcase the return of Missy (Michelle Gomez) along with The Doctor's age-old nemesis, the Daleks. Writer Mark Gatiss teased this month that the Ice Warriors (a reptilian humanoid race from Mars) will reappear, too, Geek reported.
The Ice Warriors' return, however, has a twist. They will be featured in the ninth episode of Season 10, which has 12 episodes.
An emoji-faced robot will also wreak havoc in the Whoniverse, along with a wrinkly, decaying creature shrouded in a red hood. The latter seems to be part of the mysterious "Truth" organization glimpsed in past set photos.
Showrunner Steven Moffat, who will leave the long-running series alongside Capaldi, said that he will completely exit "Doctor Who" after this season's Christmas episode. He confirmed that he will not write episodes for incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall -- "at least not for the foreseeable future," Radio Times reported.
"Doctor Who" Season 10 airs at 9 p.m. ET on April 15. The upcoming season will serve as the first outing of new companion, Bill (Pearl Mackie).
