iPhone 6 Release Date Rumors: Why a Larger Battery Is Not a Problem for the 5.5-Inch 'iPhablet'
BySome reports may have suggested the significant increase in screen size may harm the iPhone 6's battery, but this may actually be far from the truth.
Mark Rogowsky, a contributor for Forbes, argued that a larger battery will actually prolong the handset's life in between charges. While nearly everything gets bigger, including the battery, some of the smartphone's main components stay the same size.
Apple's weak iPhone battery is no secret, as Samsung has even taken to creating a commercial campaign called "Wall Huggers" to point it out.
The iPhone 5S has a 1560 milliamp (mAh) battery and rumors have indicated the new 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will have a 2100 mAh battery, with the 5.5-inch one will be 2915 mAh. Respectively, those are good for size increases of 35 percent and 85 percent.
After translating a report from Chinese website Apple Daily, Mac Rumors obtained a photo of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6's 2,915 mAh battery. At 0.4 inches larger than the Samsung Galaxy S5, the "iPhablet" also outpaces its 2,800 mAh battery.
Rogowski noted that elements like a more sophisticated processor and more pixels in the resolution are major subtractions from battery life. While Apple may claim otherwise while trying to sell the device, iOS 8 most likely will not affect the battery either way and neither will more LED illumination.
The tech writer speculated that the 4.7-inch handset and 5.5-inch "phablet" will have components the same size, but resolution will be the key in which battery is more efficient. Apple could well decide to give them both the same resolution, which would in turn give the larger iPhone 6 much longer life.
Apple is expected to make it three years in a row of releasing a new iPhone in mid-Sept., but whether or not both handsets will hit the market at the same time is unclear. Re/Code previously reported that Apple is planning an unveiling event for Sept. 9, setting logical release date at Sept. 19 or 26.
Customarily, Apple has not said a word to the validity of any rumor floating around the web, so we will just have to wait for that not-so-cryptic event invitation.
