On May 24, Joe Biden, who is the 47th vice president of America and is a US Senator for six terms, will address Harvard's 2017 graduates, Harvard Gazette reported. Speaker selection committee co-chair Avni Nahar welcomed Biden saying the former vice president is a significant inspiration to the graduates as they think about how they will impact their communities as citizens and leaders after graduation. Meanwhile, Nahar's co-chair Victoria Jones said that they have witnessed how Biden served the nation with humor, humility, and diplomacy.
Biden is also notable for his temperament and his wonderful relationship with former president Barrack Obama, which became subject for a lot of viral Internet memes, Harvard Magazine reported. After being the VP, he and his wife, Jill Biden, came up with the Biden Foundation, which advocates for violence against women on colleges. Biden said in a press release that this generation's student is the most engaged and most tolerant batch in the US.
It's a tradition for Harvard College seniors to invite a guest speaker for their Class Day since 1968. Martin Luther King Jr. became their first invited guest. King accepted the invitation a few days before he was assassinated.
King's wife Coretta Scott King delivered the address for him. This makes her the first woman to give the address to the Harvard graduates. Since then, the speakers they invited have spanned across various fields including social activism, politics, film, journalism, and more. Class Day also includes award presentation and orations delivered by students.
