Sony's PlayStation 4 (PS4) went on sale Friday at 12 a.m. and by that same time Saturday the tech company had sold one million units of its newest video game console.
According to USA Today, Sony sold more than one million units of the PS4 to North American customers within the first 24 hours it was on sale. That is the fastest start in the video game console's history.
Soon after the PS4 launch, some buyers reported a common problem with the system not connecting to their television sets. Several other customers had the same problem with flashing blue light, followed by the TV output not working.
"A handful of people have reported issues with their PlayStation 4 systems," Sony said in a statement to IGN. "This is within our expectations for a new product introduction, and the vast majority of PS4 feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. We are closely monitoring for additional reports, but we think these are isolated incidents and are on track for a great launch."
According to BBC News, Sony said this particular problem is affecting about 0.4 percent of the customers who purchased PS4 units during the opening weekend. Sony offered solutions such as ensuring the hard drive is place properly in its slot in the console. Sony also suggested holding down the power button for seven seconds, a complete system shutdown, before turning it back on.
"PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal," Andrew House, Sony president and CEO, said in a statement. "Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on Nov. 29."
According to Venture Beat, PS4 could realistically surpass the Wii U in sales very soon. Nintendo's latest console has been on the market for about a year and has only sold 3.91 million units. It will be a long time before the PS4 competes with its predecessor, the PlayStation 3, which has sold more than 80 million units since its launch in 2006.
The PS4's main competition, the Xbox One, will launch Nov. 22 in 13 different markets worldwide.
