Sony will have to wait through the weekend to get the officials sales numbers, but from crowd size alone, it seems like the PlayStation 4 (PS4) is going to be quite successful.

Officially launching in New York City, Brooklyn's Joey Chiu was the first person in North America to purchase the PS4 at Sony's launch event. Upon receiving it, he hoisted the box above his head like he had just scored a touchdown.

Chiu's moment of elation was just a snapshot of gamers across the nation rejoicing in the latest and greatest video game console. According to CNN, hardcore PlayStation loyalist George Nelmus did not even sleep after buying his console at midnight.

"I've been a PS dude since the first PS," said Nelums, the first in line to pick up a PS4 in Elkridge, Maryland. "I'm not planning on sleeping tonight. I've got a 6-hour energy drink. I'm all set."

In Dallas, Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant stopped by a local Walmart and bought everyone in line a PS4, according to Yahoo Sports.

The feeding frenzy has caused a quick shortage, however, and several retailers will have to wait for another shipment before selling more units. According to PC Magazine, Best Buy, Amazon and Game Stop are among those sold out of PS4s. Walmart has stopped offering a tracker to notify customers which area stores have the console in stock and Toys R Us has removed the option to purchase it online as well. In other words, if you did not pre-order the PS4, you are likely out of luck.

As Kotaku reviewer Stephen Totilo noted, waiting to buy the brand new game system might worthwhile. So far, there is no game exclusive to the PS4 and not as many of your friends will be on the new online network. Plus, Sony likely has bugs to work out and it might be better to let those system updates accumulate so those wrinkles can be smoothed out by the time you buy the new console.

"I'm calling this a Review (In Progress). These days, many game reviews aren't really done when they first run," he wrote. "They can explain parts of the game accurately at launch, but online communities shape these games. That's true, too, for the surprisingly online-centric PlayStation 4."
