Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is being groomed to become "the biggest spectacle movie of all time." The movie is going to focus on Peter Quill/Star Lord (Chris Pratt) and Ego the Living Planet's (Kurt Russell) reunion as father and son.

When "Guardians of the Galaxy" first came out in 2014, there were a lot of questions regarding Star Lord's parentage. While it was shown that his mother died of cancer, not much was mentioned about his father. The big mystery will soon be unraveled in "Guardians of the Galaxy 2," wherein Ego The Living Planet will be introduced as Star Lord's father.

It's quite a curious thing to have a living planet as a father, and it's a major departure from the comics where Star Lord's dad was actually a humanoid-looking alien named J'son. When asked why Ego was chosen to play father to Pratt's Peter Quill, director James Gunn told io9 that he didn't like the fact that J'son is a king in the comics, and that Star Lord and J'son's relationship would seem to replicate a Darth Vader-Luke Skywalker thing.

"I like the idea of Quill's father being an ancient, cosmic, incredibly powerful being who, just like Rocket, has problems connecting to other people because [...] there's nothing else like him," Gunn explained. "This character has a hard time connecting to other people because he's a god who's been alone for billions of years."

Gunn further revealed that "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is not so much about who Peter Quill's father is than it is about the "dysfunctional family triad" that the characters have.

The superhero quartet are all returning in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." Groot, however, will have a much smaller role compared to the first movie, considering he's still pretty much Baby Groot by the time we see him again in the sequel. This is because the second film picks up just two months following the first film.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" baddie Nebula, played by Karen Gillan, will also return in the sophomore film. Although she becomes a full-fledged member of the Guardians gang in the second movie, she's still not someone you can have fun with. In an interview with IGN, actress Zoe Saldana said Nebula is still "resentful and bitter."

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will premiere on April 25, 2017.
