Seagate 60TB SSD dethrones Samsung's 16TB SSD as the biggest solid state drive in the world. Seagate's groundbreaking drive has twice the density and four times the capacity of Samsung's 16TB SSD.

Seagate claims that the SSD can hold 400 million pictures on social media platforms or about 12,000 DVD movies. However, the Seagate 60TB SSD is intended to be used in enterprise data centers. This means that it is going to be too pricey for regular consumers.

Seagate general manager and VP for SSD products Brett Pemble said that the explosion of data can translate into more value for enterprises if they know how to accommodate the data through proper and correct means. He added that Seagate 60TB SSD will allow their clients to solve the continuously growing data management necessities.

Seagate 60TB SSD comes in a 3.5inch form factor which would be useful in the management of its storage inside data centers according to Seagate. Its form factor eliminates the need to support different form factors covering hot and cold data, Business Wire reported.

No information has been revealed about the price point of the Seagate 60TB SSD. However, the company claims that it will releasing it under the lowest cost per gigabyte of storage compared to available flash storage products. For comparison, Samsung's 4TB 850 EVO SSD already sells at a price tag of $1,500, TechTimes reported.

Seagate 60TB SSD, however, is still in its prototype stage currently but the company is looking to push the device into production starting next year. It has also been noted that with the latest architecture that the company has incorporated into its 60TB SSD, Seagate's path toward the development of a higher capacity SSD, 100TB, has been opened up. Meanwhile, Seagate 60TB SSD is slated to launch in 2017, reportedly.
