Warner Bros. Pictures gained the rights to the live-action Minecraft movie from Mojang in February, but no further details were divulged about its progress until now.

On Monday, June 27, the popular game studio's COO Vu Bui took to the company's official website to announce the official release date; however it looks like "Minecraft" fans are in for a really long wait as the aforementioned movie is not slated to make an appearance until 2019.

The much-awaited movie will be released in 3D and Imax screens on May 24, 2019, which imply there's enough time to hazard a guess about the details. The acclaimed Swedish game developer has already roped in Rob McElhenney - the star and creator of the hit sitcom, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" as director.

However, no other details about the actors involved or plot of the movie were revealed, CNet reported.

Further clarifying the delay, Mr. Bui noted that the team working on the "Minecraft" movie needs that much time to ensure it turns out to be nothing short of awesome.

The fan-favorite sandbox video game was released in 2011 and instantly propelled to popularity becoming the third-best-selling video game of all time.

Microsoft acquired the game's developer, Mojang for a whopping $2.5 billion (around £1.9 billion or AU$3.4 billion) citing the kind of money the game makes. The hit game has spawned an array of action figures, cosplay costumes, plush dolls, a convention, apparel, a spin-off adventure game series and more.

In February 2014, Markus "Notch" Persson (Swedish programmer who originally created "Minecraft") revealed that Mojang is planning to team up with Warner Bros. for a "Minecraft" film that will be produced by Roy Lee and Jill Messick.

In October, the same year, Mr. Bui confirmed that the movie was "in its early days of development" and noted that it was a "large-budget" production.

Mr. Bui also hinted the movie might not be released until 2018 at the time. The studio later announced that it had roped in Shawn Levy to direct the film.
