Everett Golson is making the rounds in the Southeastern United States, as several schools in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) are showing interest in his football services despite a certain graduate transfer rule.
While the NCAA allows student-athletes who have graduated to transfer without penalty, the SEC does not but, like the NCAA, they can grant a waiver to bypass the rule. So for an SEC team to accept Golson's transfer, they will need to be confident in getting a waiver to let Golson play this season.
According to the Associated Press, Florida seems to be the only SEC suitor showing interest in Golson. Newly hired head football coach Jim McElwain told the AP he cannot comment on the situation, but "[Golson] mentioning us is something that's exciting."
Before going to Gainesville to visit at Florida, Golson visited Tallahassee. 247Sports.com suggested Florida State emerged as a natural frontrunner because they are in the ACC and do not have a restriction on graduate transfers. The only potential roadblock is Sean Maguire, the QB who has backed up Jameis Winston and is currently favored to start for the Seminoles.
One intriguing possibility for Golson is Alabama. ESPN learned Alabama would be interested in accepting Golson's transfer, despite some skepticism that SEC Commissioner-elect Greg Sankey to grant the waiver he would need to play.
Rounding out Golson's SEC consideration list is Georgia and South Carolina, which would be his home state school. Georgia coach Mark Richt would not comment to the AP and South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier told the State outright the team is "not pursuing" the former Notre Dame QB.
On Golson's list of 10 Power 5 schools of possible transfers is also a mysterious Pac-12 team, which is apparently not UCLA, a school he has no plans on visiting. Texas was also seen as a strong fit for Golson, but Notre Dame is not allowing his to transfer to any team they play this season.
