Neither the Los Angeles Lakers nor the New York Knicks are tiptoeing around contacting Derek Fisher in regards to their open head coaching jobs.

Anonymous sources have told Yahoo Sports both teams have reached out the 39-year-old point guard, who is not even a lock to retire. Both teams' interest in Fisher likely piqued once the Oklahoma City Thunder were eliminated from the playoffs last weekend.

The sources said the Knicks are the frontrunners to hire Fisher due to Phil Jackson's interest and the fact that the Lakers reportedly want someone with experience. Jackson, recently named team president, reportedly wants to groom Fisher as a coach.

Fisher won five NBA championships with the Lakers, all with Jackson as the coach, so it makes sense for the new Knicks' president to want one of his former stars. What's more is Fisher has several similarities to Jason Kidd, the longtime Nets' point guard who went straight from playing to coaching.

Kidd did well with a veteran Brooklyn Nets squad this year and Fisher could potentially coach players like Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler in New York.

According to ESPN, Jackson may have let his interest in Fisher get the best of him. The NBA reportedly fined Jackson $25,000 for his comments at a recent press conference for "tampering with" Fisher. Jackson discussed in a news conference his interest in hiring Fisher as the Knicks' next coach before the guard's season was over.

ESPN later reported the Lakers are taking a "more deliberate approach" to their coaching search and have interviewed veterans like Byron Scott, Alvin Gentry, Lionel Hollins and Mike Dunleavy.

"I'm still struggling with the results of [the series]," Fisher said in a news conference Sunday. "I haven't [had] a chance to talk to my wife and kind of step back emotionally from the end of the season. That's important to do, so that whatever is next, there has to be a separation from the end of the season and what just happened and then I can go from there."
