This New Year's highly-anticipated College Football Playoff quarterfinal game of heavyweights, Notre Dame and Georgia, a Sugar Bowl, has been rescheduled for Thursday night instead.

While not an easy decision due to preparations already in line, this move was implemented for safety purposes after a truck attack in the early hours of Wednesday morning on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Recent reports stated that at least 15 people were killed and 30 individuals were injured.

According to local officials' plans shared by The Washington Post, the game was going to go ahead as scheduled on that Wednesday night, which they eventually canceled to ensure safety and raise security.

An attack that the FBI labeled as "terrorism" happened around 3:15 AM. The suspected terrorist was reported to be one named Shamsud-Din Jabbar. Investigators believe that Jabbar had an accomplice in this crime. The incident dampened the revelry of New Orleans and escalated concerns over the city's security.

Why Were the Game of Notre Dame and Georgia Postponed?

The Sugar Bowl is one of the most historic traditions in college football, serving as a College Football Playoff quarterfinal game and bringing fans from across the country to the event. Held annually in New Orleans, this year's matchup between powerhouse teams Notre Dame and Georgia made the game a focal point in the playoff lineup.

However, playing the game so soon after the attack was a very risky move. The attack in the French Quarter had left the city in shock, and investigations were still ongoing, along with security concerns.

For the Sugar Bowl, additional precautions had to be made given the close nature of the attack and how fans and citizens are affected within that area. Now, AP News reported that the rescheduled Sugar Bowl is set to take place under much more stringent security measures to ensure the safety of players, fans, and officials.

The other games scheduled to play Wednesday at the College Football Playoff in Atlanta and Pasadena, California, took place as planned. The other games kept their schedules, making this a local phenomenon in New Orleans.

Details about the ongoing investigation would be made public in due course while law enforcement works on investigating the reasons for this attack.
