Universities across Florida are canceling classes ahead of Tropical Storm Helene, which is expected to make landfall on Thursday.

The University of South Florida, Florida A&M University, Florida State University, University of Central Florida and University of Florida will all be closed at least from Wednesday until Friday morning, according to the campus updates.

Florida State announced Tuesday that it will remain closed through Sunday. Additional details on student services and programming will be shared on alerts.fsu.edu as they are available.

"​​All academic operations will be suspended to accommodate any potential disruptions caused by the storm. All academic deans and faculty members are asked to work closely with students and provide maximum flexibility during this time," an update from Florida A&M University read.

By late Thursday, the storm is expected to intensify to a Category 3 hurricane and make landfall in Florida's Big Bend region.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, all of the Palm Beaches, the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee County are under a tropical storm warning.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in 61 counties ahead of the storm. Only a few counties in southeast Florida were not included. Downed trees and power outages are expected in northern Florida and Georgia.
