Student loan debts are a great concern for the nation and for the students. Public Service

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PLF) program gives loan forgiveness to those who are employed in a government or non-profit organization. Any outstanding balance from a student loan gets forgiven after completing 120 payments under a qualifying repayment program while working as an employee from the mentioned organizations.

Teacher Loan Forgiveness

Those who have served as a teacher to low-income families for five consecutive years are also eligible for student loan forgiveness. Aside from the service, there are also other requirements that need to be met. Those who are eligible can get up to $17,500 off their subsidized and unsubsidized loans from the federal government.

School Closure

Students whose school suddenly closes while they are still enrolled is entitled to a loan deferment.

Total and Permanent Disability

According to the Federal U.S. Aid website, there are some types of disability and mental impairments that are eligible for student loan forgiveness. All applicants need to do is submit a proof required by the Department of Education.

Borrower's Defense

If a school has conducted some illegal activity in dealing with or have misled students, those students are eligible for student loan forgiveness of their federal loans. Such cases were students enrolled in for-profit schools, such as Corinthian Colleges.

Forgiveness Programs Sponsored By The State

State-sponsored student loan forgiveness are given to those who teach in areas which are considered high need. Students can check the American Federation of Teachers Database to check which state offers loan forgiveness programs.

Cancellation of Federal Perkins Loans

Aside from teaching in low-income or high-need areas, loan forgiveness is also offered to those who are teaching certain subjects. Loan deferment is offered to those who are qualified for such programs.
