The Washington State University (WSU) student arrested for multiple blow dart attacks on the school's campus apologized in court Thursday and called himself "a moron."

According to KREM-TV, Joseph Gillies, 18, police arrested him Wednesday aided by tips and surveillance footage. Gillies was accused of shooting a woman with a blow dart on WSU's campus in Pullman, Wash., as well as several other similar attacks.

In total, Gillies shot four people with blow darts, but did not say why, just that he was foolish and is sorry.

"I'm sorry it's a huge regret," Gillies told KREM. "It's going to stick with me for the rest of my life. It's childish. It's immature. It's ridiculous."

Pullman Police responded Jan. 12 to a report of a young woman on WSU's campus who was shot with a strange dart. They believed it came from a certain type of blow dart gun because it punctured her stomach through two layers of clothing. She did not need medical attention.

Two days later, police responded to another attack, this one with a blow dart sinking one-half inch into a man's back. The dart matched the one from the attack on Jan. 12 and, shortly after, police learned of other similar attacks in Ellensburg.

After gathering leads from various people, police were able to match a car caught on surveillance to Gillies' vehicle. He said he picked up shooting blow darts from doing it with friends, shooting them at objects and each other for fun.

"It wasn't a game. It'd just be like, 'Aww you're not paying attention you get one in the butt. You pull it out, laugh about it and keep going,'" said Gillies told KREM.

He has been released from jail and will go home to where he lives with his parents until his next court date at the end of the month. He is facing felony charges of assault in Ellensbug and Whitman County. His maximum sentence could be five years in prison.

"My mom called me on the phone crying like, 'Why would you do this? What's going through your head?' I just told her 'I got nothing. You got me. I'm a moron,'" Gillies said. "That's what I said to her and she started crying and it sucked."
