"Bates Motel" season 5 premieres tonight, Feb. 20. In the early episodes, viewers will see Norman Bates life in his "multiple realities". Freddie Highmore and executive producer Kerry Ehrin teases what is in store in the last and final season of the series.

Freddie Highmore, Kerry Ehrin Talks Norman's 'Multiple Realities'

According to Highmore's interview with TV Insider, he teases how he tributes Anthony Perkins' Norman Bates in the movie "Psycho" to his Norman Bates in the television version. He will show the actor's portrayal of his character, the darker side where he delves deeper into his imaginary world.

Highmore adds the "dichotomy" set up of Norman's life. Viewers will get to see two worlds in the show. If in the previous seasons Norma's psychopathic version only appears a few times, in season 5, she will appear every now and then in Norman's life.

Norman, says the actor, will live between two realities. One in his own world with his mother and the other in the world outside his imagination. It is said in USA Today report that he will try his best in "Bates Motel" season 5 to live like a normal person "everyone thinks he's a success story" of surviving alone while in grief.

"We explore the dichotomy of his imaginary life with Mother," the actor says, "and the version of himself he presents: that of a lovely motel owner."

Meanwhile, in Ehrin's interview, the showrunner hints Norman's attraction to Madeleine Loomis (Isabelle McNally). However, Mother (Vera Farmiga) will show no acceptance to her son's friendship (or more like infatuation) to the woman who resembles her.

'Psycho' In 'Bates Motel' World

As per the aforementioned source, Ehrin hints that there will be plenty of "Psycho" tributes in "Bates Motel" last season, However, it does not mean they will mimic the same flow of the movie and adapt it in the TV version.

One of the incidences that "Bates Motel" season 5 make use of one of "Psycho" iconic scenes is where Norman dresses up as Norma, donning a blonde wig and a dress.

In the released trailer, Caleb will witness Norman's transformation as her sister as he shouts his nephew. In this part (00:36), it seems like the latter finds out about her sister's death and might also discover her dead body in the basement. Sadly, it seems like Caleb will be in danger and might also face death as Norman appears in his back while in his blackout.
