Google Robots Only A Matter Of Time After The Company's Eighth Robotics Purchase In The Last Six Months
ByGoogle made its latest robot-themed purchase on Friday when it acquired the robotics company, Boston Dynamics, Gizmodo reported.
The Bostonian company makes semi-regular headlines whenever it completes a new, animal-named bot project. Its last creation, Wild Cat, runs like a large African cat, but with a metallic body more similar to a warthog. Most of Boston Dynamics' robots are used in war, where they transport heavy supplies over rough terrain. See video at end of article for more information.
Boston Dynamics is the eighth robotics company Google has acquired over the last half year, according to the New York Times. Given its international reputation, it was probably the most significant purchase of the eight. Yet, six months later and no one really knows what Google plans to build with its resources. Representatives of the search engine company have thus far kept their plans secret.
We do know that Google appointed Andy Rubin, most famous for the development of the Android, as leader of the robotics movement. According to the Times, Boston Dynamics and the other seven companies could be part of a larger plan to create a line of robots for factory work.
"I am excited by Andy and Google's ability to think very, very big," Boston Dynamics founder Marc Raibert told the Times, "with the resources to make it happen."
It's been over twenty years since Raibert, a former M.I.T. professor, founded the robotics company; yet, this will be his first movement into the commercial side of the industry. Most of his previous work has been with the military.
Boston Dynamics robots are modeled to run like an animals, and have a "reputation for being extraordinarily agile, able to walk over rough terrain and handle surfaces that in some cases are challenging even for humans," according to the Times.
