Amazon Drone Delivery System: Did Jeff Bezos Announce New Innovation on Cyber Monday Just for Publicity?
ByAmazon introduced its delivery drones to the world recently and, ever since, many have been left to wonder if the devices are real or a hoax for publicity.
In a 60 Minutes interview with Charlie Rose, where the reporter and a camera crew were invited to the Amazon fulfillment center, company founder and CEO Jeff Bezos showed off the delivery drone.
As the Amazon creator told Rose, the concept is simple. When someone orders an item, they may choose the "Amazon Prime Air" option to have their package delivered to their doorstep in 30 minutes.
"Half hour delivery," Bezos said, "and we can carry objects, we think, up to five pounds, which covers 86 percent of the items that we deliver."
There are some obvious constraints, which Bezos said will be worked out. For example, he said he believes he can get the proper authorization from the Federal Aviation Admission (FAA) to fly the drones within five years.
ZD Net's Larry Dignan wrote Monday that this timeline is highly unlikely and causes reason to believe Bezos is pushing the delivery drones now for publicity. That is the "cynic's" point of view. Dignan also presented two other possibilities.
The "optimist" says this is another bombshell of innovation from a company that was a simple online bookstore in 1995. Bezos has pushed the envelope with Amazon ever since and delivery drones are just the next piece of mad scientists innovation.
The "realist" realizes it is a cool idea and is most likely doable, but not within five years. The "realist" will be looking forward to it somewhere down the line because, given Bezos' incredible track record, it is probably on the way.
"What do we make of Amazon's drone plan?" Dignan wrote. "The realist, cynic and techno-optimist outlined above are all correct. Bezos is a showman so you can bet the drone story is well timed so Amazon dominates the news on Cyber Monday. Amazon will also target new markets that initially look crazy and prove you wrong. And Amazon will likely have drone delivery, but it'll take some time."
According to Forbes, it worked. Reported Tuesday morning, a Google search for "Amazon drone" produced 637 million results. While Bezos emphasized this plan is not "right around the corner," his intention was clearly to make sure the Internet knew about his new innovation.
