Apple officials announced the release of the latest version of its OS X operating system for Mac laptops and computers at its 2013 Event in San Francisco on Tuesday.

The OS X Mavericks, one of Apple's most anticipated new products, became available on Monday as a free download for new and old computers dating back to 2007, ABC News reported.

"With a single step update, you can run Mavericks," Apple Senior Vice President Craig Federighi told reporters.

Named after the surfing location in northern California, Mavericks brings a host of new features and apps to Mac computers and laptops, many of which began on Apple's iOS 7, its operating system for the iPad and iPhone.

According to Apple's website, the new operating system includes iBooks, which allows users to sync the books they are reading on their iPad or iPhone with their Mac computer. It also includes Apple's Maps app, which will sync with iOS devices to easily transfer addresses from the Mac laptop to the iPhone.

During the presentation where the company unveiled its new products, Federighi said with the new operating system, a computer should get up to an hour longer battery life on a single charge. A feature called App Nap focuses the computer's power toward applications currently in use, extending the battery life of laptops, according to the Huffington Post.

Other additions and updates are smaller but very useful, according to ABC News. The Finder window, which allows users to search the operating system and computer, now has a tabbed view to minimize windows. Notifications have been improved with a new summary of what the user misses while they were away from their computer. A new feature called Tags lets users tag their photos and files so they can easily organize content across apps.

Apple said the OS X upgrade will make old computers run faster and more efficiently.

According to the Huffington Post, the Contacts, Calendar and Notes apps got a sleek makeover in Mavericks that puts them more in line with how they appear in other Apple products like iOS on iPhones and iPad. Also for the first time, an OS X computer with multiple displays will let you look at two full screen apps at once.

The new software is compatible with all the same computers that are able to run the current Mac operating system - Mountain Lion.
