As Apple prepares to release its new iPads and Mac computers, the tech giant still seems to be playing catch-up, especially with its smaller-sized tablet.

According to the Associated Press, the Wall Street Journal and several others, Apple will unveil its iPad 5, iPad Mini 2 and Mac Computers at an event Tuesday in San Francisco. The tech company has customarily released new products in the fall so they hit the shelves in time for the holiday season.

With any Apple unveiling, rumors tend to swirl well beforehand, but, the day of the event, the final speculations and guesses are in. The iPad Mini 2 is most likely going to have retina display, like its larger predecessor. This means the fifth generation of the traditional tablet will definitely have the enhanced visual display.

The iPad Mini 2 will not be the first tablet in its size to have such a sharp display. ZD Net's Jason O'Grady wrote Monday the second-gen mini tablet "needs a retina display" to compete with other devices on the market. The current iPad Mini has a 1,024x768 pixel resolution, which is dim and flat in comparison to Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle HDX, which both have 1,920x1,200 resolutions.

As they did with the cheaper iPhone model 5C, O'Grady wrote that he thinks Apple could do the same with their iPads. The new Mini model could have some new features like iOS 7 (of course) and retina display, but would lack certain things like Touch ID.

However, Chinese tech website ZOL posted two photos of a supposed leaked iPad Mini 2. The device is the same champagne gold color of the new iPhone 5S and also appears to have a Touch ID sensor home button. Although the button's outer appearance could simply be designed to look like the new Touch ID without offering that function, it has lead to widespread speculation.

A bit of a dark horse to appear with the new iPads is a "smart cover," as ZD Net's Jason Hiner called them. The cover would double as a keyboard, similar to Microsoft's Surface tablet. Hiner said the lightweight keyboard cover was the only attraction to the Surface tablet and noted it could be an accessory add-on for the new iPads.

Apple's new Mini tablet would likely remain at its $329 price tag, unless it reveals extra features to be packed in. That would keep it at the lowest priced current iPad model with the most expensive likely being the newest fifth-gen with 3G capabilities and 128 GB of storage, expected at close to $1,000.

We will know for sure what these new iPads feature before the day is over, but regardless, they will be compared to and will have to compete with several other already-successful tablets on the market.
