The "Harley Quinn" movie makes one big step forward as it hires its official scriptwriter. The movie, which is pegged as a spinoff to "Suicide Squad," will see the return of Australian actress Margot Robbie as the wildly animated and witty anti-hero.

Screenwriter Christina Hodson is taking on the big responsibility of penning the "Harley Quinn" movie for Warner Bros. and DC Films. The Wrap reported that the project, however, is not a solo Harley Quinn outing, but rather would feature several female superheroes and villains from the DC Comics universe.

Basically, it's female power in all shapes and forms, with Harley Quinn potentially leading the pack. So far, popular names such as Batgirl and Birds of Prey have been attached to the film, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet. DC has a very wide and diverse list of female superheroes and villains that it would be interesting to see which characters are joining the mix for the "Harley Quinn" movie.

Hodson has been in demand in Hollywood recently. Earlier this month, it was confirmed that she's also the screenwriter in charge of the "Bumblebee" movie, which is a spinoff to "Transformers." She's also written a reboot for "The Fugitive," which will also be helmed by Warner Bros. and produced by Arnold Kopelson.

Robbie will not only star in the "Harley Quinn" movie. She will also produce the film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources say Robbie is responsible for bringing the project to the table. It is said that when she did her research on Harley Quinn, she learned about the other female DC characters and fell in love with them. She even brought on board the writer who helped developed the "Harley Quinn" movie project and presented it to Warner Bros.

Although Harley Quinn may not be as iconic or as big a household name as Wonder Woman, she's received more notoriety. As a matter of fact, Harley Quinn merchandise and comics outsell Wonder Woman's. And for Halloween 2016, Harley Quinn's costume, as depicted by Robbie, became a popular choice costume for females.

Meanwhile, the "Suicide Squad" DVD release date has been set for Dec. 13, 2016.
