Samsung Acquisition Plans Opens up i-Message Service; Latest Mergers Gives Apple a Run for its Money
BySamsung announced its plan to buy off Harman for $8 billion, its biggest acquisition plan to date. Not only that, the giant Korean-based tech company also revealed they will acquire messaging company NewNet Communication in an undisclosed amount allowing it to catch up with its rivals in the instant messaging arena.
While NewNet Communication is not as hot as Harman, with the latter providing audio and connected systems for over 30 million cars in the international front, NewNet will provide the ultimate solution to Samsung's messaging problem over the years.
Harman promised Samsung a huge boost in the in-car infotainment aspect, which competes with Apple's CarPlay and Google's Android Auto systems. NewNet on the other hand will pave the way for Samsung's very own i-Messaging type service, Tech Crunch reported.
As Samsung tries to put behind its fiery Samsung Galaxy Note7 scanda, its acquisition of NewNet Communication will help the company introduce its very own instant messaging service that could rival Apple's i-Message or WhatsApp, or even Google's many chat apps, which all have billions of active users worldwide, Silicon Republic reported.
Samsung said this acquisition is critical milestone. What they didn't announce is it's also a critical milestone for the communications industry in general as it provides consumers with plenty of options.
The Canada-based company, NewNet, specializes in the RCS services and infrastructure which allows file-sharing, high-quality voice, group, and video calls, and more. The technology basically allows all these features across different user devices and network operators, which is similar with Apple's.
NewNet will remain a standalone business under Samsung's command and although it wasn't revealed exactly how Samsung will use the company, this will certainly enable Samsung to catch up with its rivals.
Earlier this week, Samsung announced its plan to acquire Harman International Industries for a sweet $8 billion deal. It also purchased Viv last month, introducing a technology that will rival Siri and Google Assistant. Samsung is really serious on its comeback.
