Microsoft's Windows Server 2016 and System Center 2016 are now generally available to customers. Pre-sales for Server 2016 started on October 1 and the tech giant always stated that customers would get access to the actual bits in mid-October, and the company is living up to their promise.
Microsoft is using the launch of Windows Server 2016 and System Center 2016 to put the focus on its hybrid cloud efforts. Windows Server 2016, which is a brand name for a group of server operating systems, enables enterprises to run their applications both in their own data centers and in public clouds. While System Center 2016 is the tech company's data center management solution for deploying, managing servers and desktops.
Microsoft's senior director for product marketing Mark Jewett, emphasized Server 2016's role in the hybrid strategy of Microsoft. Jewett said that hybrid cloud is not just about being connected, it's about being consistent, according to Tech Crunch.
The company sees Windows Server 2016 as only one product in its comprehensive hybrid strategy, which also includes the Dynamics 365 and its desktop equivalent, Office 365 and its desktop productivity apps, as well as SQL Server and Azure's SQL Database service.
However, Windows Server 2016 is supposedly a cloud for the masses. This is evident in the two biggest areas of change. One is the Hyper-V hypervisor, which became better in this release. While the second is giving assistance to Containers and Nano Server, The Register reported.
That being said, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft's largest rival in the public cloud space, doesn't currently have much of a hybrid strategy, but the cloud computing service of Amazon is expected to announce a deal with the subsidiary of Dell Technologies, VMware. Given that the announcement of AWS is a bit of an open secret, it's probably not a surprise that Microsoft is trying to prevent Amazon's announcement.
