Nina Dobrev, who plays a dual role as Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce on "The Vampire Diaries," will reportedly return to the series' eighth run. Talks of her return on "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 would be icing on a cake that would make the season and series finale end on a high note.

However, let us be realistic for a minute. To date, there is no deal struck with Dobrev for her return to the series. Both she and Ian Somerhalder have expressed their unwillingness to work with each other again. Celeb Dirty Laundry reported that both actors have called a truce. Nevertheless, the former has expressed that she will not return for the final season.

Now that's out of the way but let's assume she does return. What would the implications be? Rumors that initially made the rounds say that if Dobrev returns to "The Vampire Diaries," she would assume the role of Elena Gilbert; however, since she also plays Katherine Pierce, it is more likely she will play the latter role.

It is given that Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) must die first in order for Elena to wake up. Since Graham confirmed that she is leaving the show after Season 8 and Season 8 is confirmed to be the last season, the theory that Elena will wake up is unlikely.

Another matter we cannot set aside is Caroline Forbes' character Candice King. TVLine asked executive producer and writer Julie Plec if audiences would get happiness between Paul Wesley's Stefan and Caroline before another obstacle comes along, wherein she says the saddest and the truest rule of television is that there is no drama in happiness. She also adds that there is also the exception to the rule, and that she wants to see Caroline and Stefan enjoy some comfort before they stumble across another obstacle.

The only theory that could work is that Katherine returns to save Damon (Somerhalder) from the crypt creature and reclaim whatever good that was taken from him. The romance angle between Stefan and Katherine is not plausible, unless we take Plec's word that this could be the obstacle she talked about to create drama between Stefan and Caroline.

"The Vampire Diaries" returns for its last and final season on The CW on Oct. 21 at 8/7c.
