Apple will reveal its next iPhone(s) at an event on Sept. 10, AllThingsD reported, citing unnamed sources.
The launch will also reveal whether or not there will actually be a second, low-cost version of the Cupertino Calif. company's smartphone. Many rumors have swirled as to the various specs and features, but the only reveal the sources gave was the launch event.
Apple acquired Authentec last year, leading to speculation of a fingerprint recognition feature. Suppliers have also told the Wall Street Journal Apple was testing larger screens for its iPhones and iPads.
These practices are customary for Apple, as they are known to test numerous different features leading up to a device's launch. Mid-September has also been the time to readily expect a new iPhone after new software is often announced during the annual developers conference in June.
The AllThingsD report would also dispel rumors of delayed production. About a month ago, DigiTimes reported the delay was due to difficulties with the fingerprint technology. It would also resolve the rumored conflict between board members and CEO Tim Cook for taking too long to announce a new product.
Although Apple's current iPhones are selling well for them, the company has seen Samsung take over as the world's top smartphone seller. Other Android smartphone makers have gained ground by offering a wider variety of choice and cheaper options.
Apple has often done the same by offering its previous two models for $100 and $200 dollars cheaper than the new one, but this year could be different. After much chatter, Apple could be ready to release a high-end iPhone along with a low-cost version.
The name of the iPhone 5's successor is not known, but some have speculated it could be called the 5S, with the cheaper version being called the 5C. Upgrades expected are with the camera, as usual, the processor and, obviously iOS 7.
Apple announced the new mobile operating system at their June developers' conference and it has been in beta since. Cook said it is the biggest iOS upgrade ever. The new mobile operating system will also be available in September, but the exact date is still not known.
In July, Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's chief financial officer, said the company would be up to a "very busy fall" and if the Sept. 10 release date for the next iPhone is true, it could just be the beginning.
Apple also has a new version of both the regular iPad and iPad mini reportedly in development. The tech giant has already updated its line of computers, but is set to release its new desktop operating system "Mavericks OS X."
Apple is also reportedly developing a smart TV and a smart watch, but there has been no indication of their release dates.
