Microsoft stated back in August that their company is supporting 4K Blu-ray discs in its revitalized Xbox One S game console. Since then, Sony was expected to announce its new PlayStation 4 Pro that would also support the new high resolution format.

Although the Sony 4K Blu-ray player UBP-X1000ES, is capable of spinning virtually any kind of optical disc, but a gamer won't be able to buy one off the shelf. Just like the other high-end "ES" components of Sony that was released in the United States, this model will only be obtainable via custom installers, CNET reported.

The director of Sony home entertainment systems, Yukio Ishikawa, said in a statement that their new reference model has been specifically designed to give gamers the highest quality video and audio possible, and it will also excite the most demanding audio/video enthusiasts.

The 4K Blu-ray player is slated to be available from authorized Sony AV dealers as well as custom installers in the spring. Pricing of the device will be announced at a later date, based on the report of PC Mag.

The Japanese tech company is also expanding the lineup of their home theater with the VPL-WV675ES, a compact 4K resolution home theater projector, which is up for grabs in November for the price of $15,000.

However, Sony UBP-X1000ES reference standard 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player not only manages disc playback, the player can also stream content in 4K along with high dynamic range for an extremely impressive color and deeper contrast compared to 4K alone. Adding up to the new UHD Blu-ray format, the new Sony UBP-X1000ES player can handle a number of other disc types such as HD Blu-ray, CD, as well as SA-CD and DVD, according to Digital Trends.

That being said, while other tech companies are aiming their devices at all consumers, Sony, on the other hand, is aiming at the custom install sets with its new 4K UHD player.
