Nexus 7 Release Date Today: Device On Sale Four Days Early at Best Buy and Wal-Mart Locations
ByAfter opening for preorder Thursday, Google's latest tablet, the Nexus 7, will be available for pickup and to buy in store Friday, four days early, CNET reported.
The tablet was not scheduled to start selling until Tuesday, July 30, but a Best Buy spokesperson told CNET the Nexus 7 would be on shelves Friday. Best Buy included a feature on its website to make it easy for customers to locate a store near them that will be carrying the tablet.
The Verge reported, in addition to Best Buy, that Amazon.com and Wal Mart also made Google's new tablet available Friday. Google's other retail partners, including B&H, RadioShack, GameStop, OfficeMax and Staples, appear to be sticking to the July 30 release.
The Nexus 7 is Google's second-generation tablet of the same name. PC Magazine's Damon Poeter obtained a unit following a press event announcing the new tablet Wednesday.
The all-black design remained the same as the first model, but the newer one was made slimmer and lighter, but not by much. Poeter said the biggest upgrade was the display. The seven-inch screen features a 1,920-by-1,200 display that he said rivaled Apple's retina display on the 10-inch iPad.
On the seven-inch screen, the Nexus 7 has 323 pixels per inch and Google boasts that is the highest rate for any tablet on the market. The tablet also features a five-megapixel rear camera.
"The new Nexus 7 has some very solid specifications, particularly around the 1920-by-1200 display with HDMI out and LTE, a massive leap forward," Patrick Moorhead, principal analyst with Moor Insights & Strategy.
The Nexus 7 will also run the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean operating system, a minor update to the current mobile OS. Information Week's Eric Zeman detailed the operating system's best features.
The 4.3 version is the fastest Android OS to date and features various modifications to optimize performance. It also supports Smart Bluetooth, also known as Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy. The new OS will also allow users to have complete control of notifications, specifying how they appear in the notification bar or if they should go straight to a Bluetooth device.
