Anonymous buyers have blown away $13.8 million and $21.8 million for the two cars, the first-ever made "Shelby Cobra" as well as the "Jaguar D-Type" race car.

Both cars were put up for sale during an RM Sotheby's (classic car auction company) auction at the five-day vintage car show or recognized as Pebble Beach in Monterey, California.

The sale price of the "Shelby Cobra" is a new record for an American car at auction, which was previously held by a 1968 Ford GT40 that sold for a paltry $11 million in 2012, according to CNN.

The classic car auction company may have tons of detailed information on this legendary vehicle, but the car is notable for being the first ever "Shelby Cobra." The car arrived in the United States in February 1962 without a motor, then the American automotive designer Carroll Shelby and his partner Dean Moon pitched in a 260 cubic inch V8 and a Ford four-speed gearbox, Jalopnik reported.

"Shelby Cobra" is so expensive for the reason that it kicked off an iconic line that would become one of the most recognizable and famous American performance cars, in which it brought the American racing on the main stage. Besides that, the vehicle is extra special because Carroll Shelby possessed the car until he died in 2012, based on the report of Tech Times.

On the other hand, the historic 1955 "Jaguar D-Type" race car that took home the grand prize at the 1956 Le Mans race in France was sold for $21.78 million. The race car was driven by Ninian Sanderson and Ron Flockhart of the Ecurie Ecosse racing team, according to USA Today.

The 1955 Jaguar race car is now considered as the fourth British-made vehicle to have ever been bought at an auction for more than $10 million. The previous record holder was a 1963 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato, which was sold in 2015 for $14.3 million.
