The University of Notre Dame fired Charlie Weis in 2009, but he still made more money from the school this year than the current head football coach, Brian Kelly, did, reported the Chicago Tribune.

Weis received a payment of $2 million this year as part of his contract buyout agreement. Weis received around $6 million when he was fired and, on the current buyout payment schedule, the total amount will reach just shy of $19 million, reported ESPN.com.

Comparatively, Brian Kelly, the man who replaced Weis, made just over $1 million from July 2011 to June 2012. That figure includes incentives based on performance, but it does not include his earnings from leading the team to the BCS National Championship game in January, reported the Chicago Tribune.

"The current head football coach is permitted to receive compensation from external sources with prior written approval from the University," the school said.

Before becoming Notre Dame's head football coach, Weis worked as an assistant to Bill Parcells with the New York Giants before moving on to become the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets.

From 2000-2004, he was the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots under Head Coach Bill Belichick. Weis helped the team win three Super Bowl titles in that period.

The success helped Weis land his first head-coaching job, getting hired by Notre Dame in 2004. After a disappointing 16-21 record over three years, he was fired and since he has had offensive coordinator jobs with the Kansas City Chiefs and with the University of Florida Gators for one season each.

Weis is currently the head football coach of the University of Kansas Jayhawks. He coached them to a 1-11 record this past season, whereas Kelly coached the Fighting Irish to a National Title game loss against the University of Alabama Crimson Tide.
