Creator of Mortal Kombat Ed Boon has some explanation why the gear system was added to Injustice 2.

In NetherRealm Studios past three games-Mortal Kombat 2011, Injustice: Gods Among Us, and Mortal Kombat X-guest characters eventually joined the roster. MK 2K11 had Freddy Krueger and Kratos of the Gods of War game franchise, Injustice had MK's Scorpion, and MKX had included horror movie icons Leatherface, Predator, Jason Voorhees, and the Alien from the Aliens movie franchise.

Fans of Injustice 2 may also be treated to guest characters. Game Informer got a chance to talked with Netherrealm's Ed Boon, where mentioned he would be surprised if they will not include guest characters for the sequel. It makes a lot of sense, especially with the fact that Scorpion was the most downloaded character in Injustice and Alien and Predator took the crown in MKX. Currently, however, Boon doesn't list any possibilities for who could join the roster of the highly-anticipated superhero brawler.

Boon also gave some details on how the studio chooses their guest characters. Sometimes it's simply just by suggestion, other times, fan feedback and the availability of characters come into play.

Boon clarified that they can't just choose what we want to do. They need to do something that can be accommodated as far the company. Boon insisted that the company always listening to feedback of the fans.

Injustice 2 will also feature a new gear system, Event Hubs reported. As mentioned earlier, fans feedback matters, and one of the questions from the community was why there's an added gear system, and Boon has some good explanation about it.

According to Boon, NetherRealm Studios have been trying to give players ways to customize their character. He added that when it comes to Mortal Kombat X, they gave players three versions of every fighter.

When he was asked about how much gear there is in the game, Boon answered thousands of pieces.
