Stacy Lynn Powers, 28, a former student development and activities coordinator at Ashford University, pleaded guilty early this month to first degree theft. She stole more than $10,000 from a Student Government Association bank account.
Powers was formally charged, January 2013, with first-degree theft and tampering with records. She is accused of using the student government account to make unauthorized withdrawals and debit card purchases between January 2, 2009 and April 26, 2012.
Powers admitted that the transactions were for personal use and not for university purposes. Her next court appearance, sentencing date, is scheduled, May 9.
Powers served as the student development and activities coordinator for the University from August 2008 to April 27, 2012, before being placed on administrative leave. She was responsible for the Student Government Association account.
A police report describing an internal theft was filed by a university official last May.
Clinton County Attorney Mike Wolf might recommend a suspended incarceration and 500 hours of community service. Charges of tampering with records will also be dismissed.
Theft in the first degree is a class C felony. And if a person is found guilty, he/she might face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of between $1,000 and $10,000.
