The Alabama Crimson Tide have another high profile season opener scheduled in the coming years, this time against Louisville in 2018.
Citing unnamed sourced, ESPN's Brett McMurphy reported the game will take place Sept. 1, 2018 in Orlando, Fla. Alabama made headlines last month for scheduling a season opening game against Florida State in Atlanta, Ga. scheduled in 2017.
This season will be the fourth straight neutral-site season opener for the Tide under head football coach Nick Saban, as they are matched up with Wisconsin in Arlington, Texas on Sept. 5. The last three were against Michigan in Arlington, as well as Virginia Tech and West Virginia in Atlanta in 2012, 2013, and 2014, respectively.
The Louisville game ensures that streak will reach seven season openers in a row, since Alabama is scheduled to open against USC in in Arlington next year and Florida State the year after.
Alabama and Louisville have only met three times, with the latter holding a 2-1 advantage. However, the last time the two teams played was the 1991 Fiesta Bowl, a game Louisville won handily at 34-7.
2016 is also the start of Orlando hosting a neutral site college football season opener, with Florida State and Ole Miss slated to kick off the new tradition. But the larger tradition in college football has been neutral site season openers in general.
Last year, Florida State kicked off its title defense with a nationally televised game against Oklahoma State in Arlington. Louisville also has one schedule this year against Auburn. Like bowls, rivalries, and conference title games, season openers are becoming college football tradition.
