Kyrie Irving Injury Update: U.S. Starting Point Guard 'Ready to Go' for FIBA World Cup Round of 16
ByKyrie Irving is fine after taking a hard fall and is expected to start Saturday in the U.S. Men's National Basketball Team's game against Mexico in the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
As the Americans wound down their 95-71 win over Ukraine Thursday, Irving fell and landed on his back, causing temporary concern for the point guard. USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski said Irving is "100 percent."
While the extra day off between the preliminary round the round of 16 is certainly welcomed for Irving, the U.S. is particularly deep in their backcourt. Still, they will go into their matchup with Mexico still able to use Derrick Rose off the bench.
"He went through the whole workout," Krzyzewski told reporters after practice, according to ESPN. "He was a little bit sore to begin with, but he worked his soreness out. He's ready to go."
Krzyzewski also nipped questions regarding Rose's health in the bud, insisting that the Bulls' point guard is doing just fine and ready to talk basketball instead of his knees. Rose has had surgery on both knees in the last two years, missing significant time on the court.
"I think at some time everyone should stop asking about him physically and just say, 'How's your game? You think you're gonna win? How 'bout that pass?' Krzyzewski said. "Sometimes, although it's nice when people say, 'How do you feel?'"
Team USA cruised to a 5-0 record in the preliminary stage, but tougher opponents loom as the tournament advances. While the U.S. has won 59 straight international games, Krzyzewski said his team does not view themselves as favored to win the tournament.
"We don't consider ourselves favorites. We have enough respect for our opponents where we know that we can be beaten," he told the team's official website. "So we prepare very hard and very respectful, and hopefully that's how our performance will come out."
