SEC Media Days 2014: Kevin Sumlin Talks Life After Johnny Manziel, Won't Name New Starting QB Just Yet
ByNext season, the Texas A&M Aggies will be without Johnny Manziel, but head football coach Kevin Sumlin said the program is ready to move on.
According to ESPN, Manziel was the main topic of discussion when Sumlin took the podium Tuesday at the SEC Media Days. The Aggies are bound to have a young passer starting this season, but neither seems to be a bad choice.
On one hand is Kenny Hill, a Texas native and a former Gatorade Player of the Year who served as Manziel's backup last season. On the other hand is true freshman Kyle Allen, one the best quarterbacks in his recruiting class. In waiting is Kyler Murray, a five-star dual threat passer who is committed to Texas A&M and who is also considered to be at the top of his class.
"You wouldn't be so excited if you hadn't recruited the Gatorade Player of the Year out of the state of Texas at quarterback [Hill] and the No. 1 quarterback in the country [Allen] behind him," Sumlin said in his address Tuesday. "What we have done is we've gone out and been able to recruit very, very well to a system that we believe in."
Texas A&M's first season in the highly competitive SEC two years ago was Manziel's freshman campaign. That year, he led the Aggies to a 10-2 record en route to being the first freshman to ever win the Heisman Trophy. Thanks to an even better sophomore campaign, the Aggies' transition into the SEC could not have gone better. Now they are building a new stadium, Sumlin is hired to a beefier contract and they are recruiting with college's football's best.
"I understand there's not going to be another Johnny Manziel, the way he played the game," Sumlin said. "That's all part of it. Now, does that mean that we change offensively? Maybe. Does that mean that we changed offensively for him? That might be the case, too."
Sumlin declined to say who his starting quarterback would be and indicated he would make that decision closer to their season opener Thursday, Aug. 28 on the road against South Carolina.
I didn't come here today to tell you who the quarterback was going to be... That will play itself out," Sumlin said. "I think we're looking at a couple weeks before we play South Carolina that we'll name a starter."
