Stephen Rivers Transfer to Vanderbilt Completed As SEC Approves QB's Postgraduate Waiver
ByThe Vanderbilt Commodores are hoping for Peyton and Eli Manning part 2, welcoming Stephen Rivers, younger brother of Philip Rivers, to the team.
The Vanderbilt football team officially announced the transfer of the younger Rivers quarterback Wednesday. Philip is a 10-year NFL veteran quarterback with the San Diego Chargers who played four years at North Carolina State University.
Stephen Rivers, a six-foot-six passer, spent the last two years of his athletic eligibility as a backup QB for the LSU Tigers. He completed his undergraduate degree in May and the SEC granted him a graduate transfer waiver Tuesday night. Rivers will be able to play his last two years of eligibility without penalty.
Vanderbilt started its climb back to prominence in the SEC under James Franklin, but the coach left to coach at Penn State. Vanderbilt then hired Stanford's defensive coordinator Derek Mason, who officially welcomed the new QB.
"I'm happy for Stephen and looking forward to having him join our program," Mason said in the team's official announcement. "Stephen brings both ability and experience to our team. He also fits the offensive system we will run under (offensive coordinator) Karl Dorrell. We're going to see great competition at the quarterback position this August."
According to ESPN's scouting report, Stephen Rivers has an unorthodox throwing style like his older brother, but great size and a quick release. Stephen also has great intangibles like competitiveness, leadership and an ability to make plays under pressure. Unlike Philip, Stephen is an "above-average athlete" but he needs to add arm strength.
Patton Robinette and redshirt freshman Johnny McCrary were the only two QBs to go through spring practices for the Commodores. When the team starts camp in Aug., Rivers, Robinette and McCrary will enter an open competition for the starting job with redshirt junior Josh Grady and incoming freshmen Wade Freebeck and Shawn Stankavage.
Also like his older brother, Stephen Rivers will wear the number 17.
