iOS 8 Release Date: 7 New Features for Apple's Newest Mobile Operating System Due this Fall
ByAfter weeks of speculation, Apple has finally confirmed several whispers of what many expected in the new mobile operating system, iOS 8, and then some.
According to USA Today, Apple highlighted iOS 8 with two rumors several people expected: a connected home and an app for health record built into the phone. Here are the new features that will arrive with iOS 8 this fall.
1. The Smart Home
Users will be able to turn their iPhones into a remote for their home. The Financial Times first reported this rumor just ahead of the Worldwide Developer's Conference and Apple proved them right.
Lights, stereo, home appliances and more will be accessible from Apple's mobile devices.
2. Healthkit
This app will track health record, which a user can carry in their pocket and make doctor visits much easier. It is also designed with the iWatch in mind, a wearable device that will eventually be released and able to read blood pressure and heart rate.
3. Messages
This feature will combine voicemail and texting, allowing users to leave audio messages in a text conversation.
4. Caller ID
Utilizing the connectivity of Apple's line of devices, users will be able to see who is calling them on their iPhone from their MacBook, iPad and iMac. Users will also be able to take the call from other devices.
5. Siri
Siri will be incorporated with the Shazam music discovery app and will also be able to help users make iTunes purchases.
6. iCloud
Users will be able to pay 99 cents a month for 20 GB of storage on the iCloud and it will be able to store and share more than just photos.
7. "Swype" Keyboard
The popular Android keyboard that allows users to swipe around the keyboard, cutting down time on texting, to form words is coming to the iPhone.
As for the hardware to use iOS 8 with, Apple is expected to stay true to form and release a new iPhone this fall and a new iPad before the end of the year. The iPhone 6 is expected to be released in two models with 4.7- and 5.5-inch screens. Also rumored to be on the way to stores is the iPad Air 2.
