Facebook Expands 'Ask' Button to Allow Users to Inquire on Unlisted Relationship Status
ByFacebook has introduced a potential solution for people who want to know what their friends' not-so-clear relationship status is.
The social media giant has introduced the "Ask" button. Now, like any piece information not listed on one's profile, other users can click "Ask" to send a note to the user requesting an update.
According to ABC News, Facebook only recently activated the Ask button for the relationship status field. If a user does not list anything for that section, other users can Ask about it. After that request, the user will be given the choice to go public or to just answer privately, listing options such as "single," "married," "it's complicated" and more.
"This feature provides an easy way for friends to ask you for information that's not already on your profile," a spokesperson for Facebook spokesperson told ABC News.
According to Mashable, when a user submits a query into a person's relationship status, they will be encouraged to ask the user out. For example, the message might read, "Are you single or what? Want to grab a drink sometime?"
The person can then reply with their relationship status, dismiss the request or ignore it all together.
Users cannot see the button on their own profile and they need to be friends with a person to see it on someone else's. Facebook confirmed the feature cannot be turned off, CTV News reported, so the only way to stop people before they ask is to publicly list one's relationship status.
The "Ask" button has been available previously and was meant to enable users to ask their friends about their hometown or college if it was not listed. Such information pales in comparison to a person's relationship status, making the "Ask" button's update much more interesting.
