Flappy Bird Returning in August, Creator Dong Nguyen Confirms Game Will Be Less Addictive and Have Multiplayer
ByDong Nguyen, the Flappy Bird creator who took his game down because it was too 'addictive,' confirmed he is once again posting the game.
Nguyen told CNBC's Kelly Evans he will be activating Flappy Bird in August and it will now include a multiplayer feature as well as being less addictive. Months after he took the game down, Nguyen told Rolling Stone in an in-depth interview he was planning on bringing it back, but did not have a set date.
In the interview, he also said the game was causing him mental stress because players of the game reached out to him and told him the extreme anguish they had playing it. Nguyen took it down even though he was making $50,000 a day from the in-app advertising.
Flappy Bird did not catch on right away, but when it did it amassed 50 million downloads. He also said he could not handle the press he was getting and public attention he faced when leaving his (parent's) home.
Flappy Bird is an incredibly difficult game that involves a player tapping a screen to keep an animated bird from hitting the ground. The player must also navigate the bird through a randomized obstacle course and the slightest mistake leads to failure. On the lighter side, some people made jokes about Flappy Bird by bragging about their high scores when they never even reached double digits.
Part of the publicity Nguyen was facing was a Kotaku article with the headline that read, "FLAPPY BIRD IS MAKING $50,000 A DAY OFF RIPPED ART." It was when the Flappy Bird maker's income was revealed and the start of widespread speculation he was copying art from Nintendo's Super Mario Brothers.
Nguyen told Rolling Stone he was inspired by Nintendo since he grew up playing it, but he did not steal anything. Nintendo also denied the rumor it was planning to take legal action against Nguyen.
Nguyen lives in Hanoi, Vietnam and operates DotGears.com, where he uploads other games he develops.
