Faced with a tough decision, Daniel Sams chose to transfer out of Kansas State and the school granted him immediate release from his scholarship.
The dynamic quarterback-turned-wideout was not going to get much playing time this season, the Kansas City Star reported. With his unconditional release, Sams will be able to play right away at the school he transfers to.
The K-State Wildcats were hoping for Sams to lead their wildcat formation, which would have allowed them to run all sorts of trick plays on opposing defenses. However, Sams would likely not have had a much larger role than that even though he totaled 1,259 total yards and 15 touchdowns last season.
"Daniel is going to have his role," co-offensive coordinator Dana Dimel told the Star last August. "If he's not starting he will play. He's not going to sit and watch. He is still going to play quarterback. Whoever wins it, the other guy has got to be ready to play, as well. That's the biggest thing.
"The last couple years we haven't really had that luxury. We have been on pins and needles. The first guy goes down and we are scrambling on offense. Now if the first guy goes down, there isn't going to be that big of a difference."
K-State head football coach Bill Snyder said he was pleased with how Sams was fitting into his new position, the Wichita Eagle reported. Now, Snyder said Sams' transfer will be so he can pursue playing quarterback fulltime since Jake Waters if fully expected to win the starting position at K-State.
"I am thankful to Coach Snyder for the opportunity I have had here at K-State and also the fans for being so supportive," Sams said in a statement. "I have become a better teammate, football player and more importantly a better person during my time at K-State, and I want to wish my teammates and coaches nothing but the best next season."
