Dr. Scott L. Scarborough has been named the 16th President of University of Akron, effective July 1, 2014. Scarborough joins the Akron community after serving in multiple positions for the past seven years at the University of Toledo (UT) and its Medical Center (UTMC).

Board Chair Richard W. Pogue said that Scarborough was the standout candidate in the search process due to his superior academic qualifications and experience in all aspects of management in higher education including financial matters.

"Dr. Scarborough clearly shares our vision for the University of Akron. We have confidence that he will help us advance our mission as a public research university committed to our students' success, to creating new models for sustaining academic excellence, and to our role as a vital contributor to the regional economy," Pogue said in a statement.

At Akron, Scarborough last served as the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs; the chief academic officer and operating officer for UT and director of UT's new strategic plan Imagine 2017 among others.

Under his leadership, "YouCollege" was launched in an attempt to enhance the performance and graduation rates of weak students. Plus, Jesup Scott Honors College underwent rebranding that lead to an enrolment growth of honors students.

Scarborough also had a stint with the University of Toledo Medical Center (UTMC) as the Senior Vice President and Executive Director. He oversaw the operations of the hospital and led the development of UTMC's strategic plan, Victory 2015.

He was also the Senior Vice President for finance and administration for both the University of Toledo and its Medical Center from 2007 to 2011. He was mainly in charge of university and hospital accounting, health information management, the budget office, information technology and internal auditing.

Prior to UTMC, Scarborough also served in several key positions at DePaul University, Texas Treasury Safekeeping Trust Company (Texas Trust), The University of Texas System and Coopers & Lybrand/KPMG Peat Marwick.

Scarborough holds a PhD in Strategic Management and an MBA and BBA in Accounting.
