Lakers Coaching Rumors: Kevin Ollie Negotiating Raise With UConn, Still Listening to NBA Offers
ByThe University of Connecticut (UConn) know their head basketball coach is a target of the Los Angeles Lakers', so they are looking to beef up Kevin Ollie's salary.
Sources told ESPN the school is looking to give Ollie a raise to double his salary. In his second year as coach of the UConn Huskies, Ollie made $1.25 million and the school is negotiating a raise that would pay between $2.4 million and $2.6 million per year.
"Kevin knows he's hot right now," one source said. "He's not thinking about leaving right now."
In his first season as Jim Calhoun's successor, Ollie's team was banned from the postseason due to NCAA sanctions. In his second season, he led the Huskies to a National Championship title despite entering the tournament as a seven-seed.
Most of the players on the team were Calhoun's recruits, so Ollie would have a chance to enhance his resume further by winning with players he courted to UConn. However, the team is point guard Shabazz Napier and forward DeAndre Daniels, while shooting guard Ryan Boatright remains undecided. Along with Napier, UConn will lose fellow seniors Niels Giffey and Tyler Olander.
Following Mike D'Antoni's resignation last week, the Lakers reportedly named Ollie and John Calipari, coach of the national title runners up Kentucky, to their shortlist of candidates. Sources told Yahoo Sports Ollie will listen to any offer from the NBA, though he has not received one at this time.
The sources said Ollie, a UConn alumnus, would be loyal to his alma mater. However, he does have several connections to the NBA that make him a desirable coaching candidate.
He has been a teammate to Kevin Durant and LeBron James, both of whom are to be free agents in the 2016 offseason. James could opt out of his contract this summer and would be at the top of every team's wish list.
Since Ollie was teammates to both players, the Lakers, or any other team, may want to sign the coach to sway either Durant or James to sign with them.
