With finals week upon many college students across the nation, stress management becomes a necessary skill to survive.
Several schools are offering their students different ways to cope with the stress of finals week. One of the more popular stress management techniques seems to be allowing students to play with cute little animals.
The Huffington Post teamed up with the University of Miami (UM) to set up relaxing activities at the school's Wellness Center. UM students will be able to play with puppies, nap on a hammock under a palm tree, practice yoga or enjoy a massage.
UM students were treated to fresh juices provided by JugoFresh, dogs from a local adoption center and beauty treatments from Five to Thrive. The HP is planning to bring this finals exam "oasis" to New York University in mid-May and to the University of California, Los Angeles in June.
UMass, Montana State University and Northwest Missouri State University are among schools using dogs to help students de-stress, NerdWallet.com reported.
"From activities such as potting plants to keep on their desks while they study to petting therapy dogs that often are a substitute for their pets at home, activities during UMass Lowell's annual Stress Relief Day are designed to relax students so they get off to a great start and stay focused and centered throughout finals week," Tracy Moore, UMass assistant director of health education and promotion, told Nerd Wallet.
A new study published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior is the most recent to suggest animals can help humans ease their worries.
"For stressed persons, animals may serve as "social ice-breakers' and thus motivate them to enroll in therapy in the first place," study lead author Li'a Maria Glenk said in a statement.
Lia Gilmore, referral services coordinator for Counseling and Psychological Services at Duke University, told the Duke Chronicle suggested five simple tips for staying calm under the pressure:
1. Take breaks to do something unrelated to studying.
2. Study outside, especially if the weather is favorable.
3. Eat healthy and regularly.
4. Prepare ahead of time, do not cram and go to sleep at a reasonable hour.
5. Keep your exams in perspective, they will not make or break your college career.
