With The Return Of The Harrisons, John Calipari Could Have 10 Future Pros On His Roster
ByThese past few weeks, culminating with yesterday's announcement that both Harrison twins would be returning to Lexington (as if one would leave and the other would stay), have been huge for John Calipari and his already growing legend. Known for ushering in and then out more top tier college freshmen than anyone in history, Calipari managed to retain six probable draft picks, including three likely first-rounders. The list, in order of their previous draft projection:
1. Willy Cauley-Stein
2./3. Harrison Twins
4. Alex Poythress
5. Dakari Johnson
6. Marcus Lee
Few coaches have had so many potential draft picks on their roster. As far as I know, none have ever returned six out of eight (Julius Randle and James Young declared and are expected to be chosen in the lottery).
In typical Calipari fashion, he downplayed the Harrisons' return.
"I didn't know," Calipari said Friday night by phone from Sacramento, ESPN reported. "We met for five minutes, and they told me they were going to make a decision today and call their dad.''
I find that story slightly hard to believe, but that's as much as I'll criticize Calipari right now, the hottest coach in the country by at least the gap Boston Marathon winner Meb Keflighezi had on the rest of the field in the middle miles of last Monday's historic win.
Given his second ranked recruiting class that includes four guys in the top 25 of ESPN's top 100, Calipari likely has 10 future pros on his roster. Because playing time might be tough to come by, the unexpected returns this year might create a long-lasting effect in which stud-but-not-quite-Julius-Randy-and-James-Young-stud Kentucky freshmen have to wait a season or two more than usual before entering the draft. Suddenly, Calipari will have the nation's best talent and a few veterans to work with. Could this be the beginning of a mini-Wooden era?
"We've got a lot of work to do," Calipari said. "But I'm happy with whom I'm starting with. I can actually have veteran guys."
Could the Wildcats go undefeated next year? They're biggest obstacles will be managing expectations and attempting to integrate the aforementioned 10 future pros. They also won't have to go through UConn, who were dealt a big blow to their repeat chances when they lost junior DeAndre Daniels.
