Nissan's new anti-car wash paint (as in, you won't need a wash because your vehicle will always stay clean) is sort of like those anti-moisture table cloths, which create a force field that somehow induces water to bead instead of soak -- thus preventing a spill from ruining a meal. The paint doesn't directly keep dirt from reaching your car, but it does prevent dirt mixed with water or other liquids, C/Net reported.
Nissan didn't invent the special paint -- that was done by Ultratech Internation -- but they claim to be the first ever to use it. In the demonstration video below, half of a Nissan Note is covered in Ultratech's invention, the other in standard-issue paint as the car sprays through a muddy road. Afterwards, the effects of the anti-water and oil substance is obvious.
"The Nissan Note has been carefully engineered to take the stress out of customer driving, and Nissan's engineers are constantly thinking of new ways to make families' lives easier," Geraldine Ingham, Chief Marketing Manager for Nissan Note, said in a statement. "We are committed to addressing everyday problems our customers face and will always consider testing exciting, cutting edge technology like this incredible coating application."
Still, the paint isn't ready yet. Further tests to assess its durability, appearance, cost, and supply could take several more years. Plus, if it repels water, what happens when the car actually needs a wash?
