Tech companies like Apple are caught in an odd position. Their product has basically nothing to do with the environment; yet, because some of their primary users -- as well as many of their employees -- are so young, they're almost forced to be environmentally-conscious (an issue typically associated with the country's youth). Plus, such companies are expected to be on the cutting edge of everything they do. Nothing is more relevant than the environment, global warming, climate change, and the like.

Apple chose today, which is Earth Day, as the impetus to update their Environmental Responsibility website, Mac Rumors reported. Basically, the additions confirm the company's commitment to their natural surroundings and include a new video narrated by CEO Tim Cook.

"Better can't be better if it doesn't consider everything," Cook says in the video (bottom), referring partly to Apple's impacts on the environment.

"Greener materials, less packaging" and doing "everthing we can to keep our products out of landfills" are some general solutions the CEO mentions.

Apple also used Earth day to make a subtle dig at Samsung, the company they've been suing indefinitely for copyright infringement. They placed this Earth Day newspaper ad:

There are some ideas we want every company to copy.

There's one area where we actually encourage others to imitate us. Because when everyone makes the environment a priority, we all benefits. We'd be more than happy to see every data centre fueled by 100% renewable energy sources. And we eagerly await the day when every product is made without the harmful toxins we have removed from ours.

Of course we know we can continue to do better. We've set some pretty ambitious goals for reducing our impact on climate change, making our products with greener materials and conserving our planet's limited resources. So the next time we come across a great idea that can help leave the world better than we found it, we look forward to sharing.
