Michigan State Vs. Virginia Preview, Prediction, And Live Stream Link: ACC Stars Vs. Future NBA Players
ByFor some reason (TV ratings I suppose), all the best games of the Sweet 16 are in the prime time spot. Tonight's two best are #1 Virginia vs. #4 Michigan State and # 4 Louisville vs. #8 Kentucky. More hype surrounds the Louisville-Kentucky game, but more quality will be ultimately found when the Spartans face the Cavaliers just before 10:00 on TBS.
Though I'd only seen them for a few games while they torched the ACC, I had a feeling I'd regret not picking Virginia to go far, which is why I have them in the Elite Eight in one bracket and losing to Memphis in the second round in another.
I wasn't sure if they were a decent team that was hot or a good team that was hot. Turns out, they were closer to their ACC-best 16-2 record than their less impressive 13-4 record, including a 35 point plowing by Tennessee (which now looks slightly better with the Vols also in the Sweet 16).
Some ESPN analyst made the point that Virginia always makes the right pass, and, eventually, the right play. Indeed, they seem to play smarter than almost every team. Lucky for them, their talent keeps pretty good pace with their intelligence. Truly, the Cavaliers are a pleasing team to watch.
Michigan State might not play as pretty, but they've probably got more talent, undoubtedly so from an NBA perspective. With all their players healthy (starters and pro prospects Adreian Payne, Branden Dawson, and Gary Harris were all out with injuries at some point), the Spartans are actually a more popular pick than Virginia to win. (They're also President Obama's pick.)
"I do think we have taken giant steps in the last 2 1/2 weeks," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo told ESPN, referring to the team that began the year 18-1. "We got our guys back. ... I thought the Big Ten tournament we did play awfully well. I thought we played well in Spokane. Are we back to the team we were then? Probably not, but are we as close as we have been all year? Definitely."
Prediction: I'm going to take Izzo's words as an omen and pick the more cohesive Cavaliers.
