Since Villanova's loss turned off 95 percent of the light on my bracket this year, Baylor has been my only remaining bright spot (no pun intended, but welcomed nonetheless). On the basis of their size and athleticism, the brightly lit Bears charged through their first two West (but really Midwest) opponents, Nebraska and Creighton. I have them winning one more for me -- tonight against Wisconsin -- before falling to Arizona in the Elite Eight.
Wisconsin seems like another good matchup for Baylor. For one, they probably didn't deserve the two seed, but that's a debate for another time. Two, they're also not overly athletic. The Badgers are, however, big, tough, and disciplined. They likely won't be overcome by the Baylor's even mightier size (a frontline of headlined by 6-foot-9 Corey Jefferson and 7-foot-1 Isaiah Austin).
Wisconsin's NCAA Tournament troubles usually have to do with their offense. Against Baylor's lengthy zone, they could struggle.
"You have to probe," Badgers coach Bo Ryan told ESPN when asked about the zone. "But I've seen the way they're playing it. Attacking it and getting people to move a certain direction, and using your angles and misdirection and different things that good zone offensive teams use, we're going to have to put all those together."
Further lowering Wisconsin's chances is their usual lack of a scoring star. As we've seen in countless tournaments, it's hard to win without at least one go-to scorer/playmaker. As usual, the Badgers don't really have one, while Baylor arguably has two: Jefferson and senior point guard Kenny Cherry (11.5 ppg, 4.8 apg).
Tonight is a big game for both Creighton and Wisconsin backers. Many had McDermott and his Blue Jays advancing into the Elite Eight, which means they'll need Baylor to win. I think they do.
