This game has the feel of Oklahoma State-Gonzaga: a talented, embattled team some may have picked to advance past the next round (OK State) versus your typical #8/#9 seed (Gonzaga). Kentucky, of course, is the popular pick tonight and a semi-popular pick to upset Arizona in the next round. All that might mean something in the regular season, but not as much in the NCAA Tournament, where nearly every team is vulnerable, especially in the early rounds.
At this point, the mystery of Kentucky has mostly been solved. They don't have multiple top 10 picks on their roster, which are necessary for a freshman-heavy team like theirs to make a deep run. They don't even have a top 5 guy now that Julius Randle has played himself into the six through ten slot, at best.
To "validate what people said we could do at the beginning of the year," as freshman guard Aaron Harrison called the tournament, the Wildcats (of Kentucky) will probably have to make it to the Elite Eight. Otherwise, they'll be just another hot team on a run. They didn't get the preseason number one ranking to go out as an 8 seed in the Sweet 16.
Lucky for Kentucky (hey!), Kansas State is one of the coldest teams to make the tournament. They lost their three regular season games and finished 6-5 over their last 11 conference games. I'm confident with my pick of the Wildcats, as is most of the country.
