A lot of people are going to regret this game, but soon forget about it because the winner plays Louisville next. Bracket-fillers (including myself) like N.C. State more than most 12 seeds, though of course few have them moving beyond the first round. Saint Louis has been slumping lately -- and didn't have any meaningful out-of-conference wins or beat fellow top 25 A-10 team, VCU, this year -- but there's something scary about a relatively unknown team like them occupying the five seed.
I went with N.C. State because like most fans around the country, I'm drawn to teams with a star player such as T.J. Warren (25 ppg). Warren's got an interesting game for a man of his size (6-foot-8) and versatility. Refreshingly, he doesn't shoot the three-ball, though his jump shot isn't bad from 15 feet out. His is an efficient game; the ball finds the basket before you can judge if Warren's move was worthy of the score. While Jabari Parker's smooth offense is impressive yet exhausting, Warren's is less graceful but seemingly more natural. He'll at least be a competent NBA player, maybe a star depending on his psyche, about which I'm still in the dark. (Like the rest of the country, I only started noticing him at the end). Likely, Warren's name will be announced by new commissioner Adam Silver somewhere around the lottery this June.
Is the rest of the Wolfpack any good? They're at least decent enough to lose tough games and defeat opponents less worthy than them. Since losing three in a row by 67 points (two to Duke and Virginia by 66) early in the conference season, they've since gone 11-6 in the ACC, the ACC tournament, and the NCAA tournament combined, including key wins over Pittsburg, Syracuse, and, most recently, Xavier. They also improved on their 35 point loss to Duke by falling to them by just 7 in the conference semifinals.
Keep an eye on Warren, tonight. Maybe you'll begin to understand his game better than I do.
