Ricky Gervais Is Face Of New Audi Commercials Championing Those Unwilling To Compromise
ByRicky Gervais hasn't been seen much stateside since using the 2012 Golden Globes as grounds for roasting nearly every celebrity present. Rather than apologize, the British comic has instead recently appeared in a set of Audi Commercials in which his refusal to compromise -- like Audi's -- is admired.
If watched in a certain order, the reference to Gervais' Globes performance goes from somewhat subtle to thoughtful reflection. He opens the first one with the statement, "I paid my dues," in tune to Queen's "We are the Champions," while examples of others who have also paid their dues for questionably defined crimes make similar comments to the beat. Gervais returns at the end to irreverently announce (or skip through) the chorus.
The second one will probably end up as the most memorable because it's the funniest and involves a little girl. She's innocently reading brutally negative comments posted about Gervais' Globes performance ("[Gervais] should keep his big mouth to himself and stay unfunny in own country"). He's taking them in the way he probably felt those 2012 actors should have taken their own slights, which weren't as negative and at least had a touch of humor.
In the last, Gervais is more serious and reflective about his experience at the Golden Globes (which he mentions explicitly) and as a comic in general. His best line compared his reception following the awards ceremony to that of a mass murderer. He also described joke telling in a rather British manner by calling it, "having a joke."
After Gervais' questionable performance in 2012 and Seth McFarlane's so-so work at last year's Oscars, awards ceremonies seem to be shying away from the bold, jabbing comic and towards the more positive, self-deprecating kind like Ellen and the queens of self-insult, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.
