AP Polls Released March 17: AP And NCAA Selection Committee Remain At Odds Over Several Teams
ByStrange that the NCAA Tournament Committee would completely disregard the AP Poll in its selection process but the AP would maybe sway (slightly) to the committee in their latest poll by allowing Virginia to ascend Louisville (and not letting the Cardinals leap past Arizona after they lost) despite both winning their conference tournaments. Still, the two bodies responsible for judging today's college basketball teams are in significant disagreement over several teams.
The biggest disparity remains #5 Louisville (29-5, 15-3), even if they should be at least number four according to the AP's standards. They were number five last week and are number five this week. We all know they received a 4 seed in the tourney, the equivalent of a 13 AP ranking at best, 16 at worst. The Cardinals deserved at least a 2. Here's to hoping their slight makes them that more dangerous. Lucky for them, they face the most questionable one seed in Wichita State.
The next largest disagreement involved #12 Wisconsin (26-7,12-6), whom the committee has slated in a two spot likely on the strength of the Badgers unmatched non-conference wins (Florida, Saint Louis, West Virginia, at Virginia, Marquette) and a late-season conference hot streak. Really, Wisconsin has only had one bad stretch -- four losses in five games in mid to late January -- but they lost their final regular season game and failed to even advance to the conference championship. Plus, they don't have a strong history of tournament success or an inspiring offense -- two characteristics typically predicative of March success.
Somehow, the NCAA Tournament Committee out-respected Kansas, for whom the AP has been making excuses all season. The Jayhawks are 24-9, a half-game worse than beleaguered Ohio State (now number 22) and sit at number 10 in the polls, but are a 2 seed by the selection committee's standards. Keep in mind, the Jayhawks have only had one sustained stretch of brilliance -- a seven game win streak to start the Big 12 season. It takes a six-game win streak against hungrier teams to capture the national championship.
